    Live by Love

    July 13, 2017

How am I supposed to live my Christian life in the midst of this sinful, rotten world?  How am I supposed to navigate the valleys of death and the roads of perdition that surround me?  The weight of expectations that the world puts on Christians is heavy, and it seems impossible to live up to them.  Thats because itis impossible.  Thank God that I do not have to live up to the worlds expectations, but rather, I get to live by God’s expectations.  As a Christian, my life should be defined by one word: Love.

In the Bible, Paul is a big advocate of love.  He implores disciples in all his churches to simply live by love:

“So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” - 1 Corinthians 13:13

“And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” - Colossians 3:14

“And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” - Ephesians 5:2

John, also echoes this idea of living by love in 1 John 3:16, “By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.”

What if Christians actually embraced the idea to live by love?  In a world where Christianity has been construed and has gone away from the Word of God, it is so necessary to know that God expects his beloved children to simply live by love.

Christians must understand that love is the motivation for all other aspects of the Christin life.  John informs us in 1 John 4:7-8 that “whoever loves is born of God and knows God.  Anyone who does not love, does not know God, because God is love.”  This tells us that if you are a true Christian, your life should be motivated by love.  It should be motivated by the love you have for God and the love you have for others.  You are kind to others because you love them.  You want to please God because you love Him.  You are joyful because of the love that is in you.  The spring in which all of life flows for Christians should be love.

So, when the Christian life seems complicated, and it seems like you cannot live up to the expectations that the world has placed on you, run to the cross and remember that we are simply to live by love, because Christ loved us.  Let the love of God and others be the motivation for your life.  Grace and Peace.
